LPG Safety & Responsible Use
LPG gas is practical, convenient and widely used for cooking, heating, braais and business operations. Like any gas product, it should always be handled, stored and used responsibly.
LPG Safety Basics
Safe gas use starts with the right habits.
Whether you use LPG at home, in a restaurant, at a guest house or for outdoor cooking, a few simple safety practices can help prevent unnecessary risk.
Quick Safety Checklist
Important Safety Note
If something smells, sounds or looks wrong, stop using it.
If you smell gas, hear a leak, see damage, or suspect that a cylinder, valve, regulator, hose, fitting or appliance is unsafe, do not continue using it. Turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so, ventilate the area, avoid flames or sparks, and contact a suitably qualified person for help.
Everyday LPG safety tips
Storage
Keep cylinders upright
LPG cylinders should be kept upright and secure. Do not store or use cylinders lying on their side.
Ventilation
Use gas in ventilated areas
LPG should be used in suitable, well-ventilated areas. Avoid using gas appliances in closed or poorly ventilated spaces.
Heat Sources
Keep away from flames
Keep cylinders, hoses and fittings away from heat, open flames, sparks and ignition sources.
Inspection
Check before use
Regularly check your hose, regulator, valve and appliance for visible damage, wear or signs of leaking.
Gas Leak Concern
What to do if you smell gas
Turn off the gas
If it is safe to do so, turn off the cylinder valve or gas supply immediately.
Ventilate the area
Open doors and windows to allow fresh air to move through the area.
Avoid ignition sources
Do not light flames, smoke, switch electrical devices on or off, or create sparks near the area.
Get help
Contact a qualified gas professional if you suspect a leak or unsafe installation.
Cylinders
Cylinder safety
Do not use a cylinder that appears damaged, badly rusted, leaking, unstable or unsafe.
Cylinders should be stored upright and kept in a safe, ventilated position away from heat and ignition sources.
Hoses & Regulators
Check your fittings
Make sure your regulator, hose and fittings are suitable for the appliance and cylinder you are using.
If a hose is cracked, worn, loose or damaged, it should be replaced before use.
Fixed gas installations
Fixed gas installations include items such as gas hobs, gas stoves, gas fireplaces, gas geysers and other appliances that are permanently installed.
These should be installed, inspected and maintained by a properly registered gas installer. Customers should not attempt unsafe DIY gas installations.
Use a registered installer
Fixed gas appliances should be handled by a suitably qualified and registered gas installer.
Do not modify setups yourself
Avoid changing hoses, regulators, valves or fixed connections unless you are qualified to do so.
Ask for guidance
If you are unsure about an installation or appliance setup, speak to a qualified gas professional.
Storage and transport reminders
Transport upright
If you collect a cylinder, keep it upright and secure during transport.
Store in a safe area
Store cylinders in suitable, ventilated areas and away from heat, flames or ignition sources.
Keep away from children
Gas cylinders, regulators, valves and appliances should not be played with or adjusted by children.
Do not force connections
If something does not connect properly, stop and ask for help rather than forcing the fitting.
